This month, we speak to Steve Fenton, Aaron Guard’s Security Supervisor, to find out more about his role and how he spends his time outside of work.
As a Security Supervisor with Aaron Guard, I work with our team of manned security guards to ensure the safety and security of the rail sites and compounds we oversee.
Solid foundations
Born and raised in Scunthorpe, my professional journey has seen me work in a range of roles. Before stepping into the world of security, I spent many years working in logistics, honing my skills in various warehouse roles. My experience in logistics provided a solid foundation, but it was my supervisory experience and keen eye for detail that truly prepared me for my current role.
Embracing challenges
I thrive on challenges and believe in the power of continuous learning. When offered the position of Security Supervisor at Aaron Guard, I embraced the opportunity to expand my skill set and contribute to a new industry. The role demanded adaptability and a willingness to learn, traits that I had developed during my time in logistics.
Rising to the Occasion
One of my proudest accomplishments dates back to the mid-lockdown period in 2020. I started working at a warehouse where the daily order volume had surged from 800 to 2,000. It was a time of immense pressure and rapid change.
I hit the ground running, quickly adapting to the new demands. Within a month, I became an integral part of the team, thanks to my flexibility and enthusiasm for learning new processes. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of teamwork and collaboration, which I believe are essential to the success of any business.
Joining Aaron Guard
I’ve been with Aaron Guard for nearly two years now, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. What I appreciate most about working here is the level of trust and autonomy I am given. I am not micromanaged; instead, I am trusted to do my job effectively. This trust lets me take initiative to ensure the safety and security of the sites I oversee.
Life outside of work
Outside of my professional life, I am passionate about coaching and sports. I coach an under-7 football team, which is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, I play for a pool team, a hobby that allows me to relax and enjoy some friendly competition.
Trusting your instincts
In the security industry, trusting your instincts is crucial. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. This principle has served me well throughout my career. Whether it’s managing access control, overseeing gate-house operations, or ensuring out-of-hours security at remote locations, trusting my instincts has helped me make the right decisions to keep our sites safe and secure.
Looking ahead
As I continue my journey with Aaron Guard, I am excited about the future. In this role I have found a place where my skills are valued, and I am trusted to make a difference. I am proud to be part of a company that prioritises safety and provides assurance to rail organisations, enabling them to focus on what truly matters- keeping the rail industry moving for passengers and freight.
