Investing in the future

Social value is intrinsic in everything we do, and we promote sustainability and responsible business practices in a way that optimises positive impact, on the communities we work within. We are always seeking smarter ways of working and look to actively work with the communities our projects are involved in. We also recognise the impact our work has on the environment and are adopting greener methods of working including setting our target to become a net-zero carbon business by 2030.

Engaging the communities we operate in

We believe learning, participation, education, and outreach are vital ways of helping local people and organisations to thrive.

We work with local colleges in the regions we operate to give young people the chance to experience engineering works to help kickstart their career.

Our apprenticeship scheme also sees a regular intake of new apprentices every year.

We have strategies set for encouraging people from under-represented communities to consider a career in the industry, alongside a strategy towards gender equality throughout the business

Supporting our service people

We also believe it is important that our military personnel are given deserved opportunities following their service. We signed the armed forces covenant and continue to work extensively with military personnel.

Our  “Railway Soldiers” initiative has assisted soldiers, from countries such as Fiji, who served under Her Majesty’s armed forces to begin a new career after becoming redundant. This initiative has been running for over 13 years and has helped hundreds of ex-services members start a new life and a successful career, thereby assisting entire communities through community economic health.

Going greener for a better tomorrow

To demonstrate our commitment to being an environmentally conscious business and driver greener business practices we have enrolled on the Network Rail Science-based Targets Charter and aim to be a carbon-neutral business by 2030.

To help support this goal, we’ve implemented the following:

  • Cycle to work schemes where we incentivise our teams to cycle to work if they work within our head offices.
  • For those travelling to site, we have invested in an electric fleet which, thanks to independent research, we can determine the carbon offset from using these vehicles compared to diesel-based vehicles.
  • A waste management system which allows us to define whether anything that could potentially be deemed as waste still has usage and can be used safely. When it comes to PPE, for example, we maintain compliance checks to determine whether PPE can be effectively recycled, in a bid to reduce disposal where possible.
