Project scope

The Ipswich Chord is a new double-track section of railway, 1.2km  long with double junctions at either end.  The new chord was commissioned in March 2014 enabling a capacity of 28 freight trains in and out of Felixstowe on a daily basis.  The project consisted on the construction of 4 bridges, 450m retaining wall, new embankment, new signalling system, new OLE and new track layout.

Aaron Rail Scope

Aaron Rail was procured to complete the following works:

 

  • Removal of the existing track over the old BR404 structure on the ESK lines.
  • Removal and reinstatement of the ballast.
  • Installation of the new Boss Hall Junction in a 3 phase delivery strategy, using road mobile and Kirow Cranes.
  • Welding and stressing of the new layout.
  • All tamping activities.

 

Additional information and details

 

  • The core works were completed during a 9 day blockade at xmas/new year of 2013/14.
  • Working alongside the alliance Aaron supported with the integrated programme
  • Collaborative working allowed the project to look at differing techniques and supporting function, enabling cost saving benefits to all parties.

 

The improvements were a significant infrastructure upgrade to the Anglian region and the project won the Best Large Project Award at the Partnership Awards in 2014
