The Ipswich Chord is a new double-track section of railway, 1.2km long with double junctions at either end. The new chord was commissioned in March 2014 enabling a capacity of 28 freight trains in and out of Felixstowe on a daily basis. The project consisted on the construction of 4 bridges, 450m retaining wall, new embankment, new signalling system, new OLE and new track layout.

The improvements were a significant infrastructure upgrade to the Anglian region and the project won the Best Large Project Award at the Partnership Awards in 2014
